SPAR senior program offers piano classes

Shreveport Public Assembly & Recreation (SPAR) announces Piano Classes for Senior Citizens, starting January 22 & 23.

SPAR will hold two classes every quarter. The Basic Piano class will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday at Airport Park Community Center, 6500 Kennedy Drive. The class also will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Bill Cockrell Community Center, 4109 Pines Road.

Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation golf membership for 2013 is now available for signup.

Memberships are for either 6 months or a year and allow the holder unlimited rounds of golf on both Querbes and Huntington Golf Courses. (Huntington is currently closed for renovation work related to the Shreveport Bond Project.)

Shreve Memorial Library is once again hosting its “Food for Thought” food drive for the holidays. Along with  nonperishable food items, peanut butter is specifically being asked for because it's in very short supply and the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana is in dire need of protein items such as peanut butter.

SPAR announces winter camps

Shreveport Public Assembly & Recreation Winter Camps for youth will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, Dec. 26 - 31, and Jan. 2 - 4 at each of SPAR's community centers.

Youth between age 6 and 11 and teens between age 12 and 17 participate in activities including exercise, games, field trips, and arts and crafts. Some centers also offer tennis and weightlifting.

Christmas Tree to be displayed at Shreveport Airport

The Shreveport Airport Authority has joined Shreveport and Bossier City schools to create a Christmas tree display at Shreveport Regional Airport.

For the second straight year, students are asked to make airport- or aviation-themed ornaments. Each tree will feature a different classroom ornament collection. The collection will be displayed on the pedestrian cross bridge at the top of the escalators at the airport.

Caddo Sheriff offers "First Gun Course” for kids

Registration is currently underway for children ages 8 to 12 to participate in the Caddo Sheriff’s Office "First Gun Course." 

The 4-hour class will be offered from 8 a.m. until noon on December 15 and January 5.  All classes will be held at the Sheriff's Regional Law Enforcement Training Academy, 15639 Highway One South.

The 25th annual Greening of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 29. This year's theme is "Celebrating 200 Years of Louisiana."
