LSU Shreveport instructor receives national publishing award | People
LSU Shreveport Adjunct Instructor Deshae E. Lott received an EXCEL Gold Medal from Association Media and Publishing. The EXCEL Awards honor the best publishing products of the association industry.
With about 1,000 entries across all categories and competing against magazines such as National Geographic, Lott won for her article, “Call Me a ‘Good Cripple’ If You Must,” published in the July-September 2010 issue of Quest Magazine produced by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The judges noted her “clear and opinionated voice, demonstrating a distinct personal style and garnering reader interest. This piece’s unique voice brings readers into another world and addresses beautifully a personal situation for a professional audience.”
The program judges over 1,100 association publications, including magazines, newsletters, scholarly journals, electronic publications and websites in the areas of editorial quality, design, general excellence, most improved and many more. In their 31st year, the Gold awards signify top status and are not given in every category every year, with pieces judged on the intended audience, mission of the organization, and the significance of the piece in the field.
A 1993 recipient of a bachelor’s degree in English from LSUS, Lott received her master’s degree in English in 1994 and her doctorate in 1999 both from Texas A&M University. Currently she teaches Professional and Technical Writing at LSUS. The winning article can be found on the LSUS website.
