Church hosting HIV/AIDS awareness program

The Philadelphia Center, Community Activist Lester Smith and Caddo Parish Commissioner Stephanie Lynch will host "Operation Cease the Violence, End the Silence", and effort to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS related issues, especially within the African-American community.

The event begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 11 at the Hollywood Baptist Church, 5305 Roberts Street in Shreveport.

The David Raines Community Health Centers has helped communities across northwest Louisiana for 20 years. The highlight of the organization's year-long celebration it's Annual Meeting and Health Careers Scholarship Banquet.

The event begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 23 at the Shreveport Convention Center. U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu will be the guest speaker.

The Aquatic & Wildlife Education Foundation hosted the 2012 Independence Day Water Resource Festival Wednesday at the J. Bennett Johnston Regional Visitor Center Downtown Shreveport.

Members of the Optimist Club of Bossier City, Bayou Outdoor Supercenter & the Red River Waterway Commission gave away 700 free Coast-Guard approved life jackets for the kids. Shreveport Fire Chief Craig Mulford applauds the life-jacket giveaway saying, “Adult supervision is a must in keeping our children safe while participating in and around recreational waterways and pools.

Cyclists of all levels of experience - beginner to pro - are invited to participate in the first annual LifeCycle bike tour that will benefit Heart of Hope – A Sanctuary for Women. 

LifeCycle 2012 will be held on Saturday, June 2 at 8:00 a.m., with registration starting at 7:00 a.m. 

There will be four routes available, including a 5 mile fun ride and a 67 mile trip into East Texas.  All rides will begin and end at the Heart of Hope, a beautiful 8,200 square foot home located at 1042

The Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is relocating to a new home.

The new facility is located at 805 Brook Hollow, Shreveport (next to Country Tavern by the auto mall).

The Red Cross still needs financial help from the public to finish paying for the new building.
