New Horizons to offer free tax preparation

New Horizons Independent Living Center in Shreveport is offering free tax preparation and tax filing by a qualified and certified preparer.

The free service will be offered between January 30 and April 15 for household income at $51,000 and below. (The service is not available to those filing "Married Filing Separately. If filing "Married Filing Jointly," the spouse must be present at the time of the appointment.)

The Cinderella Project of Shreveport is asking folks to donate prom dresses during the group's January Dress Drop-Off Event. The Cinderella Project collects the dresses and distributes them to women who cannot afford one.

‘Stars, Guitars & Animals from Mars’ to reign at pet parade

Thousands of pets and their owners, dressed in their Mardi Gras finest, are expected to converge on Shreveport’s downtown riverfront for the annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Pet Parade on Sunday, Feb. 3 at RiverView Park, 601 Clyde Fant Parkway.

Activities begin at 1:30 p.m. and the parade starts at 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “Stars, Guitars & Animals from Mars.” Prizes will be awarded for Best Float, Pet/Owner Look-A-Like and Best Dressed contests, with judging from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The royal court of pets will be presented at 2:30 p.m.

The LSU Shreveport Debate team finished first in debate sweepstakes at the Southern Forensic Championships hosted on the LSUS campus January 25-27.  The tournament hosts teams from Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas also crowning the top teams and competitors in each state.  LSU Shreveport finished with 25 awards including 8 Louisiana Champion honors.
